The health care “debate” has long been lost in the Twilight Zone. Part of the problem is that the Democratic Party has devolved; somewhere during the last sixty years, they lost their spines, and replaced them with some weak, jelly-like substance that quivers in delight at the utterance of such words as “compromise” and “bipartisan”.
The only thing that may possibly save any chance of a meaningful overhaul of health care in this country is the undeniable ass-hattery of President Obama’s opponents. For example, let’s have a look at the march from this last weekend. There are people who compare President Obama to both Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin (forget the fact that you cannot be both a Fascist and a Communist at the same time, or that all Obama wants to do is make sure people have access to those things that make them healthier, as opposed to say, oh, killing them in mass numbers).

There are people who call Obama a “spoiled brat” (I’m willing to bet they weren’t saying that about former President George W. Bush, who probably can be accurately described as a spoiled brat).
And then there are the geniuses who wear Confederate flag t-shirts and carry signs calling the President a liar. Because only a real patriot wears the symbol used by 19th-century racist traitors.
And these are the people with whom liberals and progressives are being asked to compromise.
You know, when a group of scientists get together to plan the next mission to Jupiter, they don’t ask moon landing deniers for their input.
These are people for whom any government-based change to the way Americans receive their health care is an anathema, who agreed with Ronald Reagan when he said that government doesn’t solve problems, it is the problem. These are people who show up at their Democratic congressperson’s town meeting to shout about the deficit exploding with government-run health care but who never once appeared at their Republican congressperson’s town meetings to shout about the deficit exploding from the money spent on an illegal war of aggression against Iraq. These are people who think that the President telling their children it’s a good idea to stay in school and become educated is indoctrinating them in socialism. (Admittedly, for some of these people, education isn’t that important anyway.) These are people who believe their God created the universe some 6000 years ago, despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary.
No, I don’t think I should have to compromise with these people at all, just as I wouldn’t seek to compromise with the Klan on racial issues, the Inquisition on secular law, or the Flat Earth Society on physical science.
Compromise? Bite me.

I agree most of these individuals protesting probably never graduated from high school and get their info from the fox "faux" news network. I personally don't like the Presidents healthcare proposal because it won't work. His cost prediction is way under what it will actually cost. The tax on "cadillac" policies are a slap in the face of labor unions who fought hard to get those health care benefits. The "fines" on those who can't or won't buy health insurance is a terrible idea. Mass. is trying the same thing and guess what the state government is paying the fines. The fact that the admistration is toying with the idea of having the irs collect the fines doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling either. Our government is encroaching on our lives more and more. Telling us how to live and what to do or else you will be fined. Living in a free society means we have the right to do as we will and it's up the individual to provide for himself and his family. Yes, some and I mean some, assistance is needed from the government but not to the point of dictating how a person will live. I was not at all shocked that Orwell's 1984 was part of the reading assignment in my kids school. Martin Gross had a very good idea in his book Washington waste a-z that said it would be much cheaper for the government to buy health insurance for the poor than setting up another government department to handle it.
