Election Day is upon us.
I am cautiously optimistic that eight years of hell is going to come to an end tomorrow.
Hyperbole? Hardly. The regime of Bush Jr. has been a disaster, from the moment the Supreme Court pulled the rug out from under the American people in 2000, to the criminal negligence that allowed the 9/11/2001 attacks to occur, to the illegal war of choice waged against Iraq in 2003, to the "swift boating" of an honorable but hapless John Kerry in 2004, to the homicidal neglect of New Orleans during Hurrican Katrina in 2005... and on and on it goes, a laundry list of malfeasance that has finally allowed the ghost of Nixon to rest, secure in the knowledge that his administration will not go down as the most corrupt in American history.
By all accounts, Barack Obama should win tomorrow's vote. I'm not going to start celebrating yet, however; the Republican machine has been incredibly efficient at stealing elections, reversing the tactics of Tammany Hall. In the modern era it is far easier to hide voter suppression than it is to explain 10,000 votes cast in a district with only 3,000 people. And the Republicans have gotten to be quite expert at a multitude of ways to deny citizens their right to vote. I feel certain they'll pull out every trick they can tomorrow.
I understand why Obama has been constantly harping on his supporters to show up at the polls, in large numbers. If the turnout is so great, if the vote for Obama is so massive, there is no way that the Republican machine can deny what is, according to every single poll you can find, an almost certain Democratic victory.
And so I remain optimistic. Guardedly so... but we'll see.

The entire election is a farce. Voter fraud from both sides, wait one side since democans and republicrats are in fact the same party, will be rampant. You have voters suppression from the media, who decided back in February to only show the "2" candidates for office. You have the Republicans who are great at suppressing the minority vote and you have the Democrats who are blantantly creating voters out of thin air. As I look at the news reports its amazing how many election sites are having problems with their voting machines. Now there is the call for "centralizing" the electorial process. Boy, does that make me feel all tingly inside. The larger states will have a huge monopoly over the smaller states on who gets elected and then to make matters even better. We will switch to an all electronic voting system with no paper backup. The voting problems at theses site that i've read about so far involve these machine that have no way of rechecking some ones vote. I have read some sinister ideas floating around that the republicans are banking on the economy tanking and worse a terrorist attack to happen for the next president. This would explain all the bad advice John McCain has been recieving and using. It's almost as if I can see the evil republican neocons in their undisclosed location mapping out the plan now. Or is it a larger conspiracy to create a one world government. The whole election process seems to run on not who would be the best but who not to vote for.
Yo, man...
You called yesterday too? Were you THAT depressed?
There's a lot wrong with the political process in this country, enabled by the press, controlled by Big Business, dependent all too often on the votes of a population blinded by their own ignorance, racism, and bigotry to understand when they are being manipulated into casting a ballot for a demagogue who has none of their interests at heart. That said...
I believe that the Republicans are a more corrupt and radical party, because of their insistence on ideological purity.
Larger states SHOULD have a greater say as to who gets elected, simply by virtue of their population; however, the electoral college should be abolished completely.
The two-party system needs to be dismantled and a proportional represention system put in its place, allowing other parties the chance to have a say in governance. What would happen if Republicans were forced to share even a fraction of their power with Libertarians? Democrats with Greens? More seats at the table means more voices means more meaningful democracy.
Given the limitations imposed upon us by our current system, I was still able to post a vote FOR Barack Obama, not just AGAINST John McCain.
I disagree with abolishing the electoral college. It was set up as a check and balance to domination by larger states. If we went by a total majority rule the candidates would only be concerned with california, new york, texas, florida, illinois, penn, ohio and maybe michigan. The rest of the states would not even be a blip on the radar screen. Each state should have a portion of each vote according to percentage of votes instead of a winner take all. In maine and nebraska the electoral votes are given out in percentages rather than winner take all. This does allow for a form of majority rule but each vote for a candidate is given to each candidate in a percentage basis.
